Maggie and I had an adventure yesterday. We painted a Very Hungry Caterpillar nursery for a lucky little girl who's due to arrive in a few months.

We had been working for a while when Maggie decided to take a short rest. That's when the baby-to-be's furry older siblings FINALLY got what they'd been hoping for: a chance to snuggle with Mag.

In the meantime, I finished my main contribution to the room. I hope Baleigh enjoys being smiled down upon by this happy sun during diaper changes!

Maggie handled all of the detailed painting, mainly because she's really awesome at it and I can't be trusted with anything smaller than a 1" sponge paintbrush. We both did our best to make Eric Carle proud.

Our first collaboration was the tree (YAY sponge paintbrushes!), chubby caterpillar (really, is Maggie awesome or what?) and cocoon (again, give me a sponge and I can do most anything semi-decently).

Then we set to work on the crown jewel. But what could it be?

Ta-da! Three guesses as to who did what on this one.

We got the room put back together, stood back to admire our handiwork, and bid our little friends adieu.

I think the room is going to be a big hit, and Baleigh's daddy is looking forward to hanging out in it with his precious baby girl.

There's just something about daughters that makes you love hanging out with them.

Thank you, THANK YOU for sharing this particular adventure with me, Maggie dearest. You're my favorite artistic collaborator and have been since the beginning. And thank you, Matthew and Danielle, for letting us do this for Baleigh. What good hands God has placed her in!

Shockingly, I did not manage to add a daily blog post during the past few weeks as I'd planned. I still have some favorite shots to share with you, however, so I'm going to squeeeeeeeeze them all into one post. Woohoo! Happy New Year!

We'll start with a four-generation session featuring some sweet ladies.

Kaylyn is the apple of everyone's eye, so she was naturally the star of the session.

Strong ladies tend to have strong opinions, and Kaylyn is no exception. I have my own strong opinion about this bunch, and that is THEY ARE WONDERFUL. The End.

I predict that Mason will be a young man with strong opinions as well. It was hard to hold onto my camera while giggling as I was getting this first shot.

All of Mason's people think he is wonderful, and so do I.

He does smile when his Mommy sings just the right song at just the right pitch ...

... but mostly he just looks at everyone as if he's thinking, "Just you wait until I decide to start talking. You will be amazed by my opinions and profound-little-man thoughts."

Kristin's general opinion is that everything and everyone is awesome and wonderful. Her smile lights up the world and makes that opinion become the absolute truth.

She is an awesome and wonderful discus thrower and was kind enough to show me her award-winning form.

With a non-stop twinkle in her eyes ...

Kristin herself is most awesome and wonderful!

Speaking of twinkling eyes, please allow me to introduce this fine family.

Skyler, Camryn, Chelsea and Spencer are experts at keeping Teena and John entertained. It's a tough job but someone's gotta do it.

This is a family that's really good at seeming normal but psssttt.... they're really not. What a relief!

The sand in the 2011 hourglass is quickly running out, so I'll hurry and share just a few more of silly friends at the beach ...

... silly grown-up kids conspiring with their sneaky dad to surprise their mom ...

... big-hearted Friends throwing a party for the folks of Oyster Creek and inviting them to stop by for a cup of coffee (with a side order of silliness) ...

... little friends who just happen to be some of my littlest cousins ...

... and two very serious musicians who stopped by to say Oh, Hello.

There was more, much much more, but this is all I have time to show you. I'll be back next year with more, and I will love every minute of it. I hope you'll be back too!

Declan has a new baby brother ...

... and his name is Kian.

Kian doesn't look a lot like Declan did when he was a baby, but that only makes him even more amazing.

It's easy to welcome a new baby into the family ...

... when your Daddy is still your very most favorite playmate ...

... and the new baby stops squirming when you kiss the top of his head ...

... and both your Mommy and Daddy turn their full attention to you when you have a boo-boo that could very well be life-threatening.

It's also sort of fun to watch your Mommy and Daddy make faces at the baby and try to get him to smile for the camera.

And because they're having so much fun with this new baby, just like they did when you were a baby looooooooong ago ...

... you love seeing how much they love him.

Brenda tells me it's GRRRRREAT! to be a granny. Of course, she loves being a mom too, but becoming Granny has completely transformed her life.

Ava arrived first, and it's easy to see how she might turn someone's world upside down.

Next came Brock, and he has made Granny's world even brighter than she'd ever thought possible.

Granny would willingly sit with them all day, feeding them strawberries and Cheerios, talking softly with them, encouraging them to play nicely with one another, and rescuing Ava from Brock's need to chew on whatever he can manage to grab.

If life is this marvelous with two little ones on Granny's lap, how much more will blessings flow when Ava's baby brother or sister arrives next month?

I for one can't wait to hear all about it!

And now, Master God, being the God You are,

speaking sure words as You do, and having just said this wonderful thing to me,

What a joy it is to catch up with young friends I've photographed before! Jack and Keely are getting so grown up it's hard to remember when they looked like this and this.

We found the perfect house to use as our backdrop for their matching outfits. (Thanks, Deena!)

And then we got down to work.

We even found Jack and Keely-sized peekaboo spots.

Later in August I went out to LA to visit my parents, and for dinner the first night we went to Mel's Drive-In. The food was pretty good and the entertainment was even better.

We also worked in a visit with our friends Heidi, Dylan and Kate.

Can you tell that Dylan is character? You first met him on my blog a couple of years ago. Big Sister Kate has done a splendid job of awakening his curiosity and teaching him to be a wonderful kid.

Our main sightseeing outing included a trip to The Getty Museum, a serenely beautiful place set in the hills above LA. The day couldn't have been more perfect for exploring the grounds and, of course, stopping for a bite to eat in the cafe.

Mom and Dad decided to soak up the beautiful day on the patio ...

... while I went inside to check out some of the exhibits. The museum is actually a cluster of buildings devoted to ever-changing, top-notch collections. Admission is always free (although there is a parking fee).

Here's a sampling of the treasures I had the opportunity to see:

We happened to be there for the first day of an exhibit called In the beginning was the Word: Medieval Gospel Illumination. Pages and pages, books and books filled with this magnificent, painstaking handwork that preserved and promoted understanding of the gospel.

I caught our reflection as we were preparing to leaf. Get it?

Thanks for the tourist moments, Mom and Dad! I know I don't take normal family snapshots and often don't even think about pulling out the camera to snap quick photos. But I'm hoping these photos will remind us of the heart-expanding adventures we've shared as our love for one another continues to grow.

I've figured out how to get (semi) caught up on blogging: post a set of photos every day through New Year's Eve beginning today. Check in daily for the next 3 weeks to see who I'll feature!

First, let's travel back in time to a perfect August evening at Quintana Beach. Mimi Pat had requested a beach session with her eight grandkids, which she thought would be much easier than getting her entire crew together for photos. As it turns out, eight kids + wide open beach + wind that carried away my hollered instructions = we might as well have had 392 people to corral!

Aren't these kiddos beautiful though?

We tried alternating between posing and playing so that the kids would stay interested and not notice how many photos I was actually shooting.

And we endlessly ran back and forth between the water and the dunes and the wet sand and the water and the dunes. Sometimes we all even ended up in the same place at the same time.

Not a bit of trickery was required to get shots showing how much they all love playing together ...

... or how intertwined they are ...

... or how ruggedly independent and free-spirited each one is.

Each one is awesome on their own, but together? Perfection.

Thanks for the exercise, Avery, David, Kindle, Rowan, Sadie, Alley, Race, Cane, Ella and Pat. I would gladly run around on the beach with you any evening you'd like!

"Welcome to Sunny Hearts! How may I brighten your day?"

Those aren't just words for the folks at Sunny Hearts, Angleton's one-of-a-kind coffee bar within a gift shop nestled into a grand old two-story house. Kathryn and her cast are experts at providing just the right flavor, just the right gift, and just the right welcoming smile to brighten any visitor's day.

I'm not a coffee drinker, but I am a coffee appreciater (appreciator??). I love to breathe deeply and inhale all of the wonderful scents filling every nook of this old house. I'm also not much of a stuff buyer, but I am a Sunny Hearts merchandise admirer and gift shopper. I am continually amazed by the beautiful and unique items Kathryn finds for her customers.

One of Kathryn's greatest gifts (and there are many) is her ability to display merchandise strikingly. For this year's Christmas season, she decided to convert their outdoor room into the Christmas House and fill it with items from the Round Top Collection as well as other special holiday decorations.

Caution: this series of photos may cause you to leap into your car and drive to Sunny Hearts (405 E. Mulberry, Angleton TX) as fast as you can.

The Christmas House is a true work of art, with countless details to discover and enjoy.

And if you're like me, you just want to buy the whole display and take it home because you KNOW you could never create your own. But maybe that's just me.

I'm not sure whether Santa actually shops here, but I did spy him at the coffee bar chatting with Conner this past weekend.

You still have time to stop by and pick up last-minute Thanksgiving decorations, but you'd better hurry - I've got my eye on several things in this display.

Since I'm doing a horrible job of posting session peeks in a timely manner, I figured I'd get even further off-track by sharing some personal photos from this weekend. My parents have been visiting and we went on a little road trip to Bastrop, San Marcos and Lockhart. Yesterday we made it to all three places in one 11-hour period. Talk about your excitement!

First up, we drove out to look at some property near Bastrop that my dad has a hankerin to buy. (Excuse me -- we been practicin our Texas-speak while nosin around them thar parts.) No, this property is not really near where the big wildfire was, but it's been suffering from the drought just the same.

It's still really pretty though. I enjoyed wandering around with my camera while Daddy talked with the realtor and Mom muttered under her breath -- I mean, listened thoughtfully.

When I looked straight ahead, I mainly saw dry and dead underbrush. Another name for that is wildfire kindling. But when I looked up, I saw greenery too stubborn to give up just because of a li'l ole thing like too little rain.

Lots and lots of cedar trees here.

Also surprising little bits of cactus peeking through every now and then.

After Mom and I dragged Daddy away from "his" property, we headed to San Marcos for a visit with our girl.

She put her sparkly gold shoes to good use while showing us around some of the Square and taking us to dinner at The Trailers. That's what it's called, right Mag? We considered all of the fare offered by each food trailer, then settled on an assortment of tacos at Mr. Bigotes. Yum. Meeee.

We then bid our tour guide adieu and drove back to the surprisingly gracious Lockhart Best Western Inn. On our way into town I asked Daddy to turn around just so I could get out and snap a shot of my Friend:

I'm not really a good snapshot taker, but hopefully these shots give you an idea of the kinds of things that grab my eye while I'm out and about.

Ears to hear and eyes to see -- both are gifts from the Lord.

I'm not sure you've ever really had fun until you've experienced the fun generated by Tom's Fun Band. I'll do my best to do them justice here, but trust me, you will want to see these guys in person.

For the last few years they've been entertaining crowds of all ages in the greater Houston area.

Tom's Fun Band consists of Chris on drums, Will on tuba, and Tom on guitar and lead shenanigans. They perform original music written especially for kids (and kids at heart).

They are not only fine musicians but also skilled sillymen.

Tom excels in getting the crowd involved, even small, somewhat reserved crowds like the one he engaged at the grand opening of Friendly Grounds Coffee Shop in Oyster Creek a few weeks ago. First he recruited several lovely princesses and a couple of swarthy pirates to help him sing a song ...

... then he hollered, "Who wants to be in a parade?!!" Lots of enthusiastic takers on that one.

Even a few of the older kids felt inspired to get involved, dancing along Happy Street and signing I Love You.

I think it was mostly because Tom is nearly impossible to resist. I mean, if you're determined not to play along, I suppose you can hold out for awhile but don't fool yourself: you will get sucked into the fun.

Take Ella, for example. She tried her hardest to remain stoic and succeeded for at least half the show. But then Tom captivated her with the FREEZE! dance, which led naturally into the JUMP! dance, followed smoothly by the HOW LOW CAN YOU GO! dance. Gotcha, didn't he, Ella?

Take a bow, Mr. Tom. You guys deserve it!

And how did he get to be so perfect? So manly? (that was for you, Mark) With the expressive, graceful, commanding hands of an orchestra conductor?

These ladies, Dean's Grammy and Nonnie, don't need any answers. They're just thrilled he's here!

I think big sisters Mia and Micah are pretty excited about him too.

They will have no problem teaching him how to be even more adorable than he already is.

Here's my biggest question:

How did one family get so many strikingly and uniquely gorgeous (sorry, Mark) kids?

I mean really.

Feast your eyes upon your newest gift, mom and dad. He has been entrusted to two of the greatest parents I know.

I am so encouraged by this Mama.

You've met Teri on the pages of my blog before: here and here.

She and her kids are healing beautifully, and they're keeping Terry with them as they move forward.

Together.

Amber, Nathan, Rachel and Payson are growing up right before my camera! I love seeing them together and watching their unique personalities unfold.

As part of their healing and growing process, the family has moved to a house out in the country. The house came complete with this cool clubhouse (aka shed) ...

... outdoor card/domino/shoot the breeze table ...

... tire swing ...

... and terrific climbing tree (especially when Teri and Payson are there to lend helping hands to smaller climbers).

It's a great place for resting, breathing in sweet country air, and taking a fresh look at the world as it is now.

When I see the five of them together, taking turns being the helper and helpee, drawing strength from one another ...

... I feel certain they will be just fine.

I can't describe the joy of Cassie and Andrew's wedding day in 25 words or less, but I can do it with 25 images:

What a privilege it was to be your photographer AND guest, Andrew and Cassie! I loved seeing how excited and emotional you both were to have finally reached your big day, and your family and friends' loving support for you was absolutely palpable. Wayne, you certainly are loved.

Your kids thought up a great Father's Day gift for you: a family photo session, the first one since those kids were, well, kids.

They thought it was high time for your grandkids to have their own portraits of themselves with you. What a good-looking bunch of characters they are!

And when all 19 of these kids-of-all-ages gathered around you, it was pretty amazing, wasn't it? What's a good word to describe how you felt that evening?

One year ago today I did a portrait session with this beautiful family. We were celebrating Terry's victory over lymphoma and his return to teaching math at Alvin High School.

Nine months later we celebrated Terry in a different way...

... and boy was it a celebration! We started with a memorial service that Terry would have been very proud of (since he had told us exactly what to do and we followed his instructions to the letter). Then we all proceeded directly to a fundraiser organized by Teri Lynn's Angleton Central Elementary School co-workers and hosted by The Ice House. People came from all over the place to show their support for this beloved family.

Nathan created his own fundraiser by picking up bottlecaps and selling them to eager customers, while Rachel hung out with a friend near the baked goodies.

Fried catfish plates flew out of the door and into customers' watering mouths.

And then the auction got underway and everyone joined in the fun.

One bidder's pockets were so deep, he brought more than one person in the crowd to tears.

And the bidder got what he really wanted out of that deal -- a hug and huge smiles from Teri Lynn.

It was a day of wildly mixed emotions, a day our community poured love onto broken hearts, a day I'll never forget. Thank you, Terry, for being the sort of guy everyone rallied around, on your good days as well as all the others. Thank you for being my friend.

I'm back after a one-month hiatus to share a very important and undeniable mathematical formula with you:

But the horror and humiliation were worth it because when I wrestled the camera back into my hands, the two junior photographers rewarded me with THIS:

Where has the time gone? Only yesterday my adorable little blonde sister and I looked exactly like Mia and Micah.... I guess I'm just going to have to stop pretending not to be affected by the relentless aging process and instead count on this promise:

Amy and Kit got married!

Would you like to hear a little bit about their day? You would? I was hoping you'd say so!

When I arrived at Stahlman Park for pre-ceremony photos, there was good news and bad news. The good news: the girls were running right on schedule, which hardly ever happens. The bad news: the air conditioner was out at the beach house they'd planned to use for dressing, so they were going to be trapped in the ladies room for the next three hours while waiting for things to get underway. The good news: they were willing to risk messing up their beautiful hairdos and go out to the water for a quick photo shoot to fill some time.

Every detail of the decorations was simply exquisite.

Now the ladies set to work in earnest, helping Amy into her dress ...

... and attempting to lace up the back. Sometimes only Mama can do it the right way.

Meanwhile, the guys showed up precisely on time and ready to go with no last-minute lacing required. This was extra helpful because they were all wearing Converse sneakers.

As soon as the ring bearer and flower girl arrived, it was time to get things rolling. They received their final instructions and headed up the aisle ...

... followed by the minister, Kit and his groomsmen as Amy's cousin strummed the wedding march.

All eyes were on Amy as she and her dad made their entrance while Amy's eyes were locked on Kit's. This is always one of my favorite moments.

Amy and her dad made their way to the appointed place ...

... scripture was read, rings were placed, vows were said, the groom kissed his bride, and it was done!

Then the celebrating really got underway. The guys finally had their chance to shine in front of the camera ...

... and the entire wedding party proved to be quite willing to play and pose together.

Next came the first dances ...

... cake and champagne and toasts ...

... and two of the nicest girls in the world locked in a knock-down drag-out fight over the bouquet.

Then DAINCIN'!

Lots and lots of totally impressive daincin'!

Kit and Amy showed everyone up, of course, but no one seemed to mind since it was their Big Day and all.

Throughout it all, what I most loved seeing was how much Amy and Kit love each other, how relaxed they are with one another.

Of all the wedding gifts you've received, love is the greatest of them all. May you always remember the true Source and Renewer of your love for one another!

Love endures long and is patient and kind; love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughtily. Wow! Babies sure change a lot during their first year. If you haven't witnessed this phenomenon lately, just take a look at Sadie on her birthday and then compare that with how big she and her older sister Ella are today!

I know I say this all the time, but it REALLY is wonderful watching this family grow up together.

They just seem to naturally have fun together pretty much all the time.

Dad Josh has fully embraced being surrounded by girls, and he is adored and admired by all three.

Life in this household is never humdrum, that's for sure.

Take for instance a simple family portrait session. This next series was taken after I'd encouraged Mom and Dad to let the girls go their own way for a while. I thought I'd chase them with my camera, catch some shots on the fly, and then we'd all settle down for a few calm, semi-posed portraits. Silly me -- Sadie had worked up an appetite!

Mom Paige says this is one of her very favorite shots because it shows her crazy family at this stage of their lives. I say it's one of my very favorites because these folks make crazy look absolutely gorgeous ...

... and give us a glimpse of heaven on earth.

I wonder what they'll be up to a year from now? Hopefully I'll get to be there with my camera to keep you posted!

It's been hard not to share portraits of this lovely bride with you. Her wedding was last night and I took an oath to wait and let her husband, daddy, family and friends see HER first rather than these photos.

And since Kathryn was so easy and cooperative to work with, I was happy to comply with her wishes.

I think it was worth the wait, don't you?

We were so fortunate to have beautiful light streaming in through enormous windows ...

Grace and Will certainly have had lots of excitement during the past couple of years. Marriage, the Air Force, moving first to California and next New Mexico, and now ISAAC!!!

It's not going to take Isaac long to realize how lucky he is to have parents who are so crazy about one another.

And now they get to love him, too! As you might imagine, it's pretty easy to fall in love with this little guy.

If he's already this expressive at only five weeks, I can't wait to see what a character he grows up to be!

Not too many high school sweethearts stay together, but Andrew and Cassie have -- 7 years and counting! We did an engagement session a few weeks ago and I'm warning you of the high cuteness factor right now.

We started in the kitchen and mixed up a quick batch of cookies ...

... then drove to Hermann Park for more room to move around.

Growing up together has shaped this couple for one another quite nicely. They share a ready sense of humor ...

Is this not the cutest birthday girl you've ever seen?

Fannie Mae's entire family gathered for her 90th birthday in April, and boy were they fun!

Fannie Mae (known to her family as Papa Mae) began with her own three children, who added nine grandchildren, who (so far) have contributed seven great-grandchildren. Uniquely wonderful, each and every one of them.

The fun thing about shooting extended families is seeing that some things never change, like the way siblings behave together ...

... while other things do change, like long-married couples who once were newlyweds themselves, and teens/young adults who will one day find themselves bouncing little ones on their laps.

What a joyous occasion, Fannie Mae, and what a full 90 years you've been given!

After looking at the way things are on this earth,

here's what I've decided is the best way to live:

Maybe you've been imagining me lounging about, taking lots of naps, and filling my days with pedicures and long lunches with friends. Or maybe you've concluded by my long absence that I've given up photography and gotten a real job. Or maybe you lost interest in daily checks of this blog and took up bowling to fill your time.

I wouldn't blame you for any of those conclusions, but what's really been going on is work work work workety work. Mostly seniors and their graduation announcements, but also a few families and recently a bride and an adorable engaged couple. I have approximately one remaining brain cell with which I will attempt to catch you up on my final nine seniors. Here are two of my favorite shots of each one.

F - U - N. That's Cody in a nutshell. I must admit I was a bit surprised to discover that fact. After all, Cody is a young man of many accomplishments, the kind that require lots and lots of hard work. Here he is with a few thousand of his one or two million trophies and awards and honors:

But what was he happiest doing? Roaming around Varner-Hogg Plantation barefoot.

Clicking his heels. Climbing a bit. Demonstrating yoga poses.

Displaying bravery and brawniness.

He even treated me to a quick tuba concert. I'm not sure what the Varner-Hogg staff thought might be going on.

But the bluebonnets were happy!

You were hoping I'd show you a few of Jessica and Rachael's individual photos, right? Good thing I aim to please. Here's Jessica starting off our morning looking all cute and cowgirlish. And then lovely and ladyish.

Basically it's impossible for Jessica to look anything other than wonderful, whether she's smiling or looking thoughtful.

Even her game face is gorgeous!

Jessica's eyes just draw you right in ...

... much the same way her buddy Rachael's eyes mesmerize.

As you can see, we used all the same locations for both sessions but played around with them a bit differently.

Isn't it delightful to see how different Rachael's beauty is from Jessica's?

Why, it's almost as if each one was wonderfully made!

Just wow. See how elegant Rachael is?

She's also a killer athlete, a double threat on the baseball field and volleyball court.

She's headed to Ohio to show those folks up north how Southern girls play ball.

It will be hard for these buddies to be separated, but I get the feeling they've only just begun a friendship that will last a lifetime. Thanks for puttering around East Columbia with me, girls. You brought that little old town some sparkle!

Taylor and I didn't stray too far from home for his senior session. Instead we worked at a relaxed pace as we toured town looking for neat locations. His favorite place was this overgrown lot near the center of town, where we pretended we were far out in the country.

His mom and I thought Taylor looked pretty sharp in his tie at the courthouse/museum area. I'm so glad someone had the bright idea to bring that old lighthouse topper into town.

We timed our session just right to catch some of the first bluebonnets blooming. They match Taylor's class ring nicely, don't they?

Stop by the train tracks and quickly pretend to hitch a ride? Why certainly!

We wrapped up our tour at Freedom Park, a nice stand-in for Brazosport Christian School's usual playing field.

I'm pretty sure this one was a perfect strike.

You might not have picked up on the clues, but Taylor is headed into the A&M system. He plans to be a very active Aggie as he prepares for a career in exercise physiology.

What's that saying Aggies like to use? Oh right -- Gig 'Em, Taylor!

On the foggiest, chilliest morning of Spring Break, Zach (a.k.a. Zakk) and I headed down to Surfside. Of course!

It truly was so foggy we couldn't see anything further than about three feet away. Including, unfortunately, any sign of sand or water or sky.

Zakk toughed it out though, mostly because I was too stubborn to give up.

Back in Angleton there was no fog, only nicely overcast skies and quite a bit less wind.

Perfect for capturing a more relaxed, less shivery Zakk.

And as it turned out, Zakk had only been humoring his mom and me by heading out to the beach and downtown Angleton. Where he really wanted to be was MSR Houston, which is sort of the equivalent of heaven for racing enthusiasts. He would live here if they'd let him, joyously wandering their acres and acres of classic cars being souped up ...

... souped-up cars ready to hit the track ...

... and souped-up cars available for admiring, inspecting, gawking at, caressing, appreciating ... sigh.

I can't believe we ever persuaded him to leave.

Don't worry, Zakk. It won't be long before you really are spending all your time at MSR or your own even better car-related business. There's not a doubt in my mind that you'll make it happen!

You've been holding your breath, haven't you? Wondering, "Who could be the third beautiful girl who was part of the Houston shoot?"

It was Sarah!

Looking back at these three sessions, it's interesting that we started in the same place each time but ended up going in very different directions. Unique personalities and interests lead to unique sets of shots.

Like these, for instance!

Can you tell that Sarah is a little bit nutty? And I mean that in only the best possible sense.

"Hey Sarah, go up and down these steps in whatever interesting way comes to mind."

"Could you hop up by that giant statue and pose with a little attitude?" (This guy symbolizes the Spirit of the Confederacy, by the way.)

Sarah is not one bit afraid of the camera, and the camera loves her.

Sarah decided not to get quite as wet in the fountain as our friend Reba did, especially after she discovered how cold it was. Again, the fact that no one slipped down the treacherous waterfalls still amazes me -- especially considering that I was one of the ones teetering on the edge.

Not just a great sport and willing accomplice, Sarah is also a natural beauty. My favorite things in this final shot are her delicate freckles.

Every hour, every mile of walking, every inch of sunburned forehead, every creaking muscle was worth the results of our day in the big city, Sarah, Reba and Hillary. Thanks for including me in the party!

Lovely Reba was the second member of my Houston senior trio last week.

I'm grasping for words here because she is just so striking.

She says she doesn't know what to do when she's in front of the camera ...

... but the camera tells another story altogether!

This next shot stops me in my tracks. I wish I could say I knew exactly what I was doing, but really I just tried shooting from several angles as I stared into those magnificent eyes.

We had to share these flowers with several other photographers working at the same time.

The gazebo and front porch of this house at Sam Houston Park drew us like moths to a flame.

And our final destination turned out to be Reba's favorite -- what she'd been planning all day, as a matter of fact. She wanted to get in this cascading fountain.

No, I mean really IN the fountain!

Not surprisingly, this proved to be a terrific idea. Surprisingly, neither one of us fell headfirst into the fountain or got swept away by the waterfall.

I love your clear sense of style, Reba. I hope these portraits help you see yourself the way others see you -- perfectly, distinctively YOU.

Hillary and I spent most of Tuesday in downtown Houston, along with two other beauties I'll introduce to you in future blog posts. Anyone who knows Hillary is familiar with her million-watt smile, so I thought I'd start off with this alternately gorgeous expression instead:

She lights up an already bright day, doesn't she?

Not even shade can dampen Hillary's sparkle.

Sam Houston Park provided a great place for Hillary to stretch her legs.

And we found all sorts of ways to make good use of the sunny day we were given.

I think we walked a total of about 5 miles, although unlike my younger friends I wore sensible sneakers instead of heels for our hike.

What a beautiful day! What beautiful company! Thanks for being such a trooper, Hillary, and for so freely sharing your smile with the world.

What did you do on your Spring Break? I spent much of my week hanging out with 8 graduating seniors, shooting thousands of frames while admiring their unique blend of qualities.

Natalie kicked off the week with style:

We went out to the entrance to the old Lake Jackson Plantation and looked around. I'm sure there's much more to see on a guided tour, but we found plenty for our purposes.

Besides, beautiful locations are really just an excuse to get outside and relax in front of the camera.

And Natalie proved to be a natural!

This was one of the most massive trees I've ever seen. Check it out sometime!

The new covered bridge was a perfect spot for Natalie's supermodel moment, don't you think?

To show off Natalie's sophisticated side, we headed downtown.

Sophie got into the spirit of fun as well.

One of my favorite things about Lindsey is her laugh. This girl laughs from deep in her belly and out through her fingers, toes and eyelashes. What a character!

Curtis is the Birthday Boy today! We celebrated by going to the Mucky Duck last night and pretending we were back in Ireland. We did a pretty good job of convincing ourselves, but I wish it hadn't been quite so dark at our table.

Warren Hood and the Goods provided terrific entertainment. Give them a listen!

I did my best to find a small Irish inn or B&B to stay in, but Houston seems to have an affinity for ginormous hotels and motel chains. We did enjoy our night at the Hotel Indigo near the Galleria ...

... along with our spring-is-in-the-air walk down Hidalgo Street on a restful Saturday morning. Curtis used our walk to perfect his photo-bombing skills. Since he's the Birthday Boy, I didn't even holler at him.

Waterwall Park was only a few blocks away, so Curtis wasn't the least bit worn out for his birthday photo shoot.

This next shot was supposed to include the Williams Tower, but I stink at this sort of self-portrait. Oh well, at least I captured our adoring gaze.

Last but not least was The Birthday Cake. Have you ever seen such an exquisitely decorated cake? Kroger chose just the right garish icing colors, and I added to the gaiety by attempting to spell Curtis' name with Smarties. I share this with you not to make you jealous (though I'm sure you are), but to confirm that I have no business decorating cakes ever.

Thanks for sharing your day with me for the past 31 years, Curtis Ray. I wouldn't want to spend February 26 with anyone else in the world!

My trip to Seattle was a quiet one, thanks to the tummy troubles of a certain Daddy of mine, but I did manage to sneak in a few final photos today on my way to the airport. First I insisted, insisted that we stop to let me get an up-close look at a pussywillow tree.

The wind was whipping around pretty impressively today, creating unusually choppy waters at the ferry dock. Too bad I forgot my surfboard. Can you see the Olympic Mountains in the top right pic?

We were positioned at the front of the ferry and got sprayed with droplets from Puget Sound. I was just glad to be snug as a bug in the back seat.

I'm visiting my parents, brother and sister-in-law in the Seattle area this week, and when I woke up in the wee hours this morning (about 7:15), this was my view of our part of Vashon Island:

I rushed downstairs, grabbed my camera, rushed back upstairs, and started shooting. After climbing back into bed to recreate my first glimpse of the gorgeous sunrise, I went to the window and this is what I saw:

By the way, this house with its amazing views is for sale. Just sayin.

Tripp, Mckinnley, Matt and Katie had a big day this Sunday.

In front of God, family and friends (including quite a few Friends!), they made it official. Congratulations, Matt and Katie!

Katie requested an after-ceremony photo session with the whole family still dressed in their wedding finery. The bubbles added a nice touch, don't you think?

Tonight I bring you proof that, at least sometimes, old dogs CAN learn new tricks.

See this dohickey? This little walkie-talkie-looking contraption? It has opened a whole new world of photography for me, one that I've been avoiding quite successfully for several years now.

My PocketWizards finally let me use flash to get the sort of lovely, natural-looking photos I adore rather than the harsh, overblown-yet-shadowy shots I refuse to shoot. See what I mean?

So I'm sure you're wondering, "How on earth did she do it?" Here was today's mini-studio setup in the Angleton Junior High band hall. Super impressive, eh? I had one PocketWizard on my camera, which triggered the PocketWizard attached to my flash, which was aimed up at a reflective umbrella, which was strapped onto the light stand.

And just like that -- MAGIC. I love these shots!

And I just love hanging out with kids. They say the darnedest things, you know. Things like (from left to right):

- "Oh, I look so pretty!!!" when they see their shots on the back of my camera.

- "Yes ma'am, it's ok," when I ask if their mom will like seeing them wearing lots of colored bracelets.

- "Got any gummi bears in there? Some gum? ANY kind of candy?" when I'm rummaging around in my camera bag looking for a memory card.

And they do the darnedest things, like sitting down and instantly striking their most fabulous pose:

Might as well start with these shots of John David. I wouldn't want to lull you into thinking, "Oh, what a nice-looking young man," and then later hit you with these two and make you fall out of your chair.

(Also, I know I should probably be calling you JD, but I've known you as John David ever since you were a little adventurer doing things like driving your mom's car through the garage wall, so John David you will always be to me.)

The old Capitol Theater in West Columbia was part of my childhood stomping grounds. It was fun to go back and look around there a bit. I half expected to be greeted by the smell of popcorn and the muffled soundtrack of a cheesy B-movie horror flick like The Legend of Boggy Creek or Ben.

We walked around the side of the building and found a beautifully blank wall perfect for using on John David's graduation announcements. What do you think?

(Also, which is worse: telling a fib or actually spraying graffiti on a wall?)

John David is an AHS varsity basketball player, so of course I had to get a shot that includes his biggest fan.

I love this marble wall! I kept shooting and shooting and shooting here, and every shot was better than the next.

Next we explored the tiny little park nestled between the Columbia Historical Museum and Chesney's Jewelry Store. It may be small, but it packs a wallop with all sorts of nice features.

(Also, the "throw your head back and laugh" trick worked better than you expected, huh John David?"

I don't know why it's taken me so long to shoot in West Columbia. Lots of the sort of spots I like, such as this one:

Finally, what you've all been waiting for, John David displaying his Fightin' Aggie Class of 2015 spirit towel swinging skillz!

It will be hard for any Aggie to miss this particular 6'6" fellow. I have a feeling he's going to redefine the meaning of school spirit. Gig 'Em, John David!

(Also, ladies, he's a nice-looking young man AND a truly nice young man. You will love him.)

Yesterday morning was a real treat! I spent a couple of hours with Danielle helping her figure out her new camera and showing her ways to make her photos even better. We went outside to find interesting things to photograph and found plenty, beginning with what we pretended was a creek:

We talked about the basic elements of a strong photo: composition, angle, light and lens. Would it be possible to create an interesting image out of just about anything, simply by walking around it to find the best angle? I like the shot on the left just fine, but I really like the one on the right. Chinaberries can be good for something after all!

Next we practiced on our semi-willing subject, Clowie. While Danielle waits for her little one to arrive in May, she has three furry babies to chase with her camera. Clowie was eager to be right beside Danielle but had absolutely no intention of looking at the camera. Pretty much like any normal kid.

I assured her that all of us moms have trouble getting our kids to cooperate when we try to create and capture The Perfect Shot.

With experience comes wisdom:

- shoot LOTS of photos, millions even

- chase and catch kids doing what they enjoy doing instead of trying to make them pose

- don't insist that they look at the camera and smile perfectly

- relax and enjoy the time together!

(sigh) Isn't Kelly just the loveliest?

And the snazziest?

She threw down this challenge for me as we discussed location possibilities: "I'd really like some pretty places, colorful places."

In January.

But God was good and spared these roses from last week's cold snap.

And we decided that "pretty" and "colorful" could actually include all sorts of things, especially when serving as a backdrop for such a pretty and colorful girl.

Kelly's mom had requested natural shots that show the real Kelly. I think we got plenty that will make her happy!

We even captured Kelly's beloved butterfly cape ... well, beloved by Kelly anyway.

I really enjoyed getting to bask in Kelly's sunny, playful spirit. Her inner joy and beauty far surpass her outer gorgeousness -- that may seem impossible but it's absolutely true!

God lavished beauty through and through this particular work of art.

I wonder how many beautiful ways He will touch the world through Kelly?

We're only minutes away from the new year, and even as I type there are fireworks bursting in my downtown Angleton neighborhood. ahem

That means I need to hurry and share one last 2010 blog post with you, and it's definitely one of my new favorites. Listen closely (and quickly) as I tell you the story of Tyler and Emily.

They asked me to go with them to Kemah for our shoot. As far as Emily knew, this was a just-because-we-love-each-other-and-want-fun-portraits-done sort of shoot. But Tyler had a hush-hush plan that I was privileged to be in on.

We started off with several just-because shots ...

... then we wandered a little bit and took some more ...

... and we paused for just a second to let me focus up close on their eyes and smiles. Emily is calm. Tyler is ... well ...

... about to be the Man of the Hour!

We finally found a nice spot for Tyler to carry out his plan. Can you see what it was?

So sweet. So smooth. So nicely done!

We took time then for just a few celebratory shots.

Talk about Merry Christmas and Happy New Year all rolled into one!

When Trudi contacted me about doing a family photo shoot to celebrate her Fierce Fiftieth, I knew I could look forward to a great time. Actually, I would have expected a fun time anyway because these particular people are incapable of NOT having fun.

Trudi and Gus are one of those couples who radiate love. For one another, for their kids, for the entire universe. God knew what He was doing when he choreographed the intricate dance that would cause their paths to cross.

Danielle, Gabe and Christin represent the many facets of their parents' union: humor, intelligence, mischief, and warmth.

Trudi and company were remarkably easy to position for group shots. They naturally fell into one lovely pose after another, which meant I simply had to encourage their ever-ready goofiness. The sequence would go something like this:

- Oh, that looks nice!

- OK, now look at each other.

- My goodness, I didn't think you could be any more adorable but I was wrong!

Or:

- Stand by the fence and hold hands.

- Now be super heroes.
- Y'all are AWESOME.

And then:

- I think this spot calls for a bit of dancing.
- Now sit in a straight row and try to be somewhat serious.
- Sigh. Perfection.

And finally:

- Could you just sort of fall on one another like I've completely exhausted you during this session?

- Could we just keep on taking pictures together forever, please?

Angleton High School choir students have mastered the art of presenting terrific madrigal dinner theatre performances. They just completed their third annual production, and it was better than ever! The costumes alone were worth the price of a ticket.

And the new high school commons provided the perfect setting for the show. The cast lined up for their processional along one of the staircases, then flowed down for a graceful, colorful, musical entrance.

Everyone took their positions around the banquet hall ...

... and then the evening's drama began to unfold. As usual, I was busy taking photos and missed some of the details, but essentially King Ozzie and Queen Sharon were insisting that Princess Kelly find a suitable Prince. She was not happy about the idea.

I believe it had something to do with having to entertain a string of less than impressive suitors.

Carrying the storyline along were jokes, dancing, voting and toasts. The lucky fellow in overalls and straw hat was declared the winner of the Princess's hand ...

... and then dinner arrived. Since this was dress rehearsal night, pizza was served instead of the traditional roasted meats and vegetables. The junior high choir students invited to the performance seemed delighted by the menu selection.

During dinner, audience members were treated to carolers and a visit from Father Torrence and his band of brothers.

After a lovely set of sacred Christmas carols, we wrapped up with a few posed character shots ...

I'm so glad to have been invited to photograph this show, and I look forward to seeing more creative work from this talented group of students and teachers. Bravo!

When I donate portrait sessions to auctions benefiting great organizations like BACH ECI, I have two goals: to help the organization raise needed funds, and to meet new people I haven't photographed before. I think I accomplished my goal of helping BACH, and I know I hit the jackpot by meeting my new friend Jennifer and her family. They were so fun!

Jennifer (in red) decided to use her session for multi-generational portraits while everyone was gathered for Thanksgiving. Here she is with her parents, brother and sister, who form the core of this family grouping:

Then the mix-and-match fun began! Great-grandparents with great-grandkids...

Without the firm insistence of moms, family portraits would never be made.

Yep, that's been my experience. Fortunately, Michelle is a pro at firmly insisting, and she managed to get her whole crew together one recent morning.

At first they tried to pretend to be very sedate, but I knew better. I just happen to have already done senior sessions with Tyler and Dillon, as well as a four-generation session with Abigail, Michelle, her mom and grandmother. It didn't take much to persuade them to cut loose a little bit.

Umm, maybe a little too much?

If only the Lake Theatre were still open, this family could be a headlining act.

Tyler, Abigail, Austin and Dillon do a good job of keeping things lively around their house.

I don't think Charlie and Michelle would have it any other way.

Relationships are strong and growing even stronger within this family...

... which is why Mom put her foot down and firmly insisted that they take the time to record this moment in their lives together.

I think she got what she wanted!

I'm so glad I got to take Justin's senior portraits! We first met a couple of years ago when I did a session with his whole family, but this time we got to focus on just him.

The Master Gardener's Center just seems to bring out the best in every subject, and Justin was no exception. I love this old barn and would do every shoot there if I could get away with it.

We also wandered around and found some purple flowers blooming. Hey -- they match Justin's AHS class ring!

Justin's friendly smile never wavered, not even when I insisted that the frog bench must be in a few shots. Hey -- those smiles sort of match!

Is it just me or does Justin rock the manly arms-crossed pose?

Up until this point, Justin had pleasantly done pretty well whatever I asked him to do for the camera. But when I showed him how handsome he looked in this shot, he suddenly lit up and became SuperJustin!

Off to the train tracks we marched, a new purpose in Justin's step. We had fun playing with the light of the setting sun to get a cool burst of colors.

We risked our lives sitting on the tracks, hoping that we'd hear a train in plenty of time to scuttle into the grass.

And for our grand finale, Justin struck a series of poses of his own choosing. Only a couple of cars had to wait for the performance to end so they could cross the tracks.

What a star you are, Justin!

On your feet now -- applaud God!

You know that age we all reach when one minute we look like a little kid but then the next minute we catch a glimpse of ourselves from another angle and OH MY GOODNESS WHEN DID THAT YOUNG WOMAN GET HERE? That must be exactly what Elizabeth is thinking these days. I promise you, she was three years old only about two weeks ago. Okay, maybe seven.

Now look at her. Playing the oboe and clarinet ...

... twirling in her ooh-la-la dress ...

... standing there with her pearls and her long blonde hair blowing in the breeze.

Even her smile and direct gaze have a new, grownup feel.

And she's suddenly become an outdoor girl who's able to withstand chilly temperatures and gusty winds ...

... and isn't afraid to take her surfboard out in those conditions!

"Don't you need a wetsuit?"

"Nah, I won't be cold."

Turns out she was cold but she toughed it out until her mom and I called her back to shore. What a trooper!

How impressive you are, Elizabeth, in so many ways.

I'm glad we braved that gusty afternoon together, and I'm really glad to see how God is shaping you into a young woman who feels more and more free to be 100% Elizabeth! OH MY GOODNESS WHEN DID THAT YOUNG WOMAN GET HERE?!!

One sunny morning at Sunny Hearts, two little fairies came to visit the Pumpkin Patch. Madalyn, the big sister fairy, showed off her rainbow-striped wings, while Cora, the little sister fairy, mainly tried to wriggle out of her wings.

They said hello to one of their own kind who stood waiting for them under a magnolia tree.

They flitted over to the pumpkin stand and picked out their favorites, hoping that the mommy fairy might let them take a couple home.

And then, oh my! Each little fairy began to do her own perfectly choreographed and executed dance. Madalyn's dance was very serious and passionate ...

... while Cora's included experimental steps and newfound delights.

For their grand finale, the two performed a lovely duet. I think it's one they've practiced since Cora was just a baby, as you can see here.

Not long afterwards, their lovely wings carried them back to their secret fairy home. (sigh) What a nice treat it was to see them out and about!

FINALLY I'm getting around to sharing these family photos taken at the Brazoria County Fair last month. Could someone please get me some Geritol, stat?!

This really was a fun session. Mark and Melissa had already planned to take their girls to the fair that day, so I just tagged along and caught them in action. When you have little ones, there really is no discussion about where to begin upon arriving at the fair. The petting zoo, of course!

Micah was in heaven, shrieking with delight when animals nuzzled up to her, petting baby animals sweetly, and obviously feeling perfectly comfortable no matter what sort of furry thing randomly bumped into her.

Mia, on the other hand, was much more wary. Her nearly-four-year-old mind knew that those animals might jump on her or bite her or knock her down, so she preferred not to give them any opportunity to do so. In fact, the one animal she was thrilled to see was not really a living animal at all but a pretend cow that could be pretend milked. No chance of that thing jumping or biting or knocking anyone down.

Next up were the stick horses and barrel racing arena. Micah quickly learned how to ride and gave everyone a run for their money. After putting the horses away, Mia got into a very deep discussion with a couple of them.

Whose genius idea was it to put a big pile of loose hay in this area? I thought we might stay there for the rest of the afternoon, Mia loved it so. And look! A really big animal for Micah to get up close and personal with!

In a word: adorable.

One last farm experience awaited us in the egg hatching display.

Then it was time to hit the midway. Micah was bitterly disappointed to be told she was too small to ride the kiddie rides (the nerve!), but Mia did an awesome job of driving her hot rod.

And the carousel is always the best ride anyway.

What else could we possibly need to complete this perfect day? Yep. BLUE COTTON CANDY. Thanks, Daddy!

Sticky hands and blue faces. Now all is right with the world!

Note to self: be sure to pester at least one family every year and talk them into letting me follow them around at the fair with my camera. There's nothing like seeing it all from a child's perspective, and there's no need to coax anyone to smile. Thanks, M4. I hope you had as much fun at the fair as I did!
