(I'm sorry, Mitchell. I have to do this for the encouragement of parents everywhere. Plus you make me smile!)

Mitchell and his family met me for a portrait session not long ago. They were all dressed so nicely, and everyone wore their best smiles for the camera.

Well, except for Mitchell.

While sisters Morgan and Emma and dad Monty kept smiling steadily for me, Mitchell's mom Lori tried to get him to look in my direction.

Nope. Nothin doin.

Now, in Mitchell's defense, we had carelessly arranged to do our session RIGHT BESIDE A PLAYGROUND.
And we cruelly WOULD NOT LET MITCHELL GO AND PLAY.
Not to mention the fact that he had to wear A SCRATCHY SHIRT AND DRESS SHOES.
It would have only been right to LET HIM GO and do what any self-respecting two-year-old boy was born to do.

Instead we drove to a different location, which helped Mitchell calm down a bit. We also made use of something given to us by a compassionate mom who heard our commotion at the park and rushed to the rescue. Can you spot it?

We almost lost him again when Mom and Dad moved out of the photo for a kids-only shot ...

... but evidently Mom and/or Dad started doing a pretty funny dance behind me and saved the day!

Thanks for hanging in there with me, Mitchell, Lori, Monty, Morgan and Emma! I share your story in hopes that other parents won't be afraid to attempt a portrait session with less-than-willing children. The key is to remember that these photographs will be priceless to you in years to come -- reminders of a time in your lives that may seem never-ending but will actually be gone in the blink of an eye. And, as unbelievable as it seems now, you will miss these days when they're gone!
So give me a call to schedule your session in the new year. Find some comfortable outfits for your family. Then take a deep breath, jump in, and relax. It will be surprisingly fun and result in treasured memories. I'll do my best to remember the Tootsie-Pops!
As you learn more and more how God works,
you will learn how to do your work.
We pray that you'll have the strength to stick it out over the long haul --
not the grim strength of gritting your teeth
but the glory-strength God gives.
It is strength that endures the unendurable and spills over into joy,
thanking the Father who makes us strong enough to take part
in everything bright and beautiful that He has for us.
