And now the moment we've all been waiting for: engagment portraits of Amy and Chris taken with my new camera! They were so brave and SO cute!

Amy and Chris are living proof that science and techie types are some of the most loving people around. I'm really glad they found each other.

They're also really patient, willing to give me all the time I wanted to explore this funky brick wall on a day when we didn't really have any sort of greenery to include in our background.

Then we took a little stroll down the street to this building I always find intriguing. Why? Dunno. I just like that rounded corner and the glass brick windows.

Here are some of Amy's responses to my purposely unhelpful posing instructions: "Just stand right around in there somewhere like you're going to push the button." Love that girl! Chris seems to be a bit fond of her as well.

I don't think it's too much of a stretch to predict that their household will be filled with lots of laughter and camaraderie.

Thanks for being such good sports, Chris and Amy. It was a joy to see how well-suited the two of you are for one another, and I couldn't have asked for better camera breaker-in-ers. I can't wait for our bridal session in a few weeks!

Trust steadily in God,
hope unswervingly,
love extravagantly.
And the best of the three is love.
Go after a life of love as if your life depended on it --
because it does.

When I took engagement photos of Jessica and Dallas a little more than a year ago, I knew they had big things in store for their lives together.

I just didn't have any idea that their first big thing would be such a tiiiiiiiiny little thing, and that he would make such a huge impact on their lives so quickly! Say hello to baby Declan:

Declan kindly agreed to snuggle in front of a brightly lit window for me just about the time he was celebrating the end of his first week as Center of the Universe. He did his best to stay awake, but he'd been up all night running the universe the night before. It's a big job but somebody's gotta do it.

His Grammy Sandy is one of Declan's most willing subjects. She mused, "Where will these precious feet take him? What will he do with these hands?"

No matter where he goes, no matter what sort of work he does with his hands, one thing is sure: Declan will be loved.

I mean really -- who could resist this kid?! Certainly not anyone who's blessed enough to be part of his universe.

Welcome, sweet little one. I can vouch for these people and assure you that you've been placed in very good hands. I look forward to the fine young man I know you will become. May your days be many and your powers used only for good. xo

Live under the protection of God Most High,
and stay in the shadow of God All-Powerful.
Then you will say to the Lord,
"You are my fortress, my place of safety;
You are my God, and I trust You."
Psalm 91:1-2 CEV

Our family lost a dear friend this week. Our old dog Fly first came to live with us when she was just a black ball of fluff. We first adopted her bigger, more rambunctious brother Rex from the SPCA, but when he whimpered and whined all night we took the advice of more experienced dog owners and went back to get one of his siblings. Fly was the runt of the litter, about half the size of Rex. While Rex ran around the yard and jumped all over everyone who came near him, Fly hunted for a warm lap to snuggle into contentedly. Can you tell which one is which?

Fly had many quirks, as I guess all dogs do. She could not ride in a vehicle without getting car sick. Ewww. That certainly cut down on visits to the vet or out of town trips to, say, evacuate for a hurricane.

Fly did not like enclosed spaces. Underneath a house or clubhouse or shed? Great! Inside a cozy doghouse? No way. Fenced into the backyard? Oh please, no.

Fly would do nearly anything for cheese. She caught on to our use of cheese when trying to lure her back inside the fence, unfortunately.

Fly would not wear a collar, and she would NOT under any circumstances walk on a leash. She would just slip her head right out of the collar and run away, or if that didn't work she'd simply lie down in the middle of the road and refuse to walk any farther. Maggie was determined to train her but gave up after having to pick her up and carry her home every time.

Fly preferred not to eat while people were watching her. Or cats. Many times she let the cats just take her food rather than eat while they hovered nearby waiting to steal it.

What is the opposite of an alpha dog? Whatever it is, that's Fly. She considered herself above no one and no thing, even when she had seniority. A long line of stray animals have come and gone at our house, and she let each one of them walk all over her. Well, except for the litter of puppies that arrived one spring. They tried to adopt Fly as their nursemaid but she was having none of that. She wasn't rude and she didn't try to hurt them, but she found creative ways to stay away from them until we had the good sense to find new homes for all of them.

Fly loved to lick. On the lips, if possible. Or a nose would do just as nicely. She quickly came to be known as Sweetie-Pie Fly because she was, well, such a sweetie. We could trust her to be gentle with kids, and kids gravitated to her because she loved them immediately. These shots of Fly and our friend Abby just radiate joyous love, don't you think?

Fly's absolute favorite place in the world was our front porch. It was her dream to be a bonafide porch dog, and there were repeated, prolonged periods when we tried to fulfill her heart's desire because we enjoyed seeing her smiling face when we walked out of the door.

After Hurrican Ike, lots of dogs roamed the streets of Angleton. Fly enjoyed getting to know several of them and developed the habit of checking neighborhood garbage cans for unexpected treats. We cleaned up other people's garbage more times than I care to remember. It was worth it though to see her playing like a young pup again with one particular dog whose family came to stay across the street for a couple of months. I was about to suggest a shared custody arrangement -- one week in their backyard, one week in ours -- when they up and went back home and Fly was left all alone again. We hated to put her in the backyard again. Week after week we made excuses and came up with new rationalizations for letting her stay on/under the front porch. But then...

I'd had to pay a fine for this sort of violation once before, and I knew what was coming if we didn't comply. So...

We broke our sweetie-pie's heart. I'm not sure she ever really recovered. Somehow we didn't make it out to the backyard to visit with our girl like we had when she waiting for us on the porch. And those darn cats -- harrrumph.
When the end came, it came quickly, just as this bitter cold wave was settling into our area. We are grateful that she let us get her snuggled into her doghouse so she wouldn't be too miserable. And we're thankful that her true Keeper took her home before she had to shiver too long.
Goodbye, dear Fly. I think it's going to be a while before we can look along the fenceline and not expect to see a ball of salt and pepper fluff topped by this face:

I sleep and wake up refreshed
because You, Lord, protect me.
Psalm 3:5 CEV

I know I'm biased, but aren't Nancy and Jacko just the sweetest?

Once upon a time they had two little girls named Christy and Traci, who grew up faster than Jacko and Nancy could ever have imagined.

Now their girls have their own families. Traci and Paul have Leslie and Alex and Meagan and Garrett.

These four are a pretty fun bunch who each have worked hard to hone their jumping styles.

Christy and Webb have Lila and Mary B, little friends I've had the privilege of chasing with my camera twice before. I had a hard time choosing which of their family shots to share with you because I love looking at all of them. ALL of them.

sigh

So far the guys are outnumbered two to one ...

... but I'm pretty sure the current ratio pleases everyone just fine. Especially Garrett.

Don't worry -- we did do a perfectly lovely and normal whole group shot. I just like this one better! I think it was Mary B's favorite part of the session because we could finally turn her loose a bit.

Quiet witness to all the madness and mayhem was this little guy, long treasured by Jacko's mother. I think he's enjoyed watching generations of his people run and play and work and laugh together over many decades.

Jacko and Nancy, you have built a beautiful family and given them a precious, eternal inheritance. What good and faithful servants you are!
You must love the Lord your God
with all your heart
and with all your soul
and with all your strength
and with all your mind;
and your neighbor as yourself.
Luke 10:27

Happy New Year, blog friends! I hope your holidays have been joyously restful and you haven't missed me too terribly. I've been taking a much-needed break from my computer after my busiest pre-Christmas photo season ever, but now I am ready to get back to work making beautiful portraits and sharing them with you here!

Speaking of beautiful portraits, this is one that I just love ...

... and not only because of the shot itself. I also happen to love all three people in this photo: my cousin Rebecca (first cousin once removed, to be exact), her husband Matthew and their son Caleb. They have been my most patient clients ever, considering that they came all the way from Virginia to do their session during the week of Thanksgiving, it took me nearly a month to prepare their gallery of images, and I'm only just now unveiling some of my favorites here. But we got so many fun shots -- including these two of the cutest three-year-old boy I know:

I'll be quiet for a minute and just let you get to know this family through their photos, which are a pretty accurate representation, if I do say so myself.

Are you seeing a trend here? Generally Rebecca stirs things up, Caleb takes it all in with a grin, and Matt simply adores them both.

Part of Rebecca's goal for our session was to get some nice shots of just the two of them -- happy 5th anniversary!

Since we just happened to be in the neighborhood, we stopped in to visit Riverview Trains. Caleb's day suddenly got a thousand times more exciting than it had already been! Except that we did have to leave at some point...

Rebecca had requested to use as many of my "small town Texas" locations as possible for our shoot, so naturally we had to head to my favorite front porch and tree-lined street.

SIGH. I just love you people. Thanks for spending the morning toodling around the countryside with me, thanks for being so patient and eager to take more more more photos, and thanks for being your awesome everyday selves. I'm grateful that we get to be a part of one another's journey!
For we are God's own handiwork, His workmanship,
recreated in Christ, born anew,
that we may do those good works which God predestined, planned beforehand for us,
taking paths which He prepared ahead of time that we should walk in them,
living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live.
